KNOCKING BALLS around with a stick was a lot of fun, up until two women walked up and started flirting. They were clearly more interested in Chase, but one kept eyeing Ave like he was gourmet chocolate. Ave had visions of being abandoned and having to call a cab, but Chase surprised him.

“Sorry, ladies. As much as we’d like to show you a good time, I’m afraid my friend here has taken a vow of celibacy. And as long as he is withholding his gifts from the world, I can’t, in good conscience, share my own.” He smiled at them sadly. “How about I buy you beauties a round of drinks as a consolation, huh?” he asked, wrapping an arm around each one and leading them to the bar.

He got them settled and came back to the table. “All right, hurry up and lose so we can get burgers, man. I’m starving.”

Ave just smiled at him indulgently and took his shot. Somehow, he managed to sink everything and ended up winning. Chase’s comments vacillated between upset over not winning and pride that he’d taught Ave to play. In the end, he seemed to settle on being happy he could eat sooner.

“Thanks for that, by the way,” Ave said, as they polished off their burgers and their latest beers. He flicked his head in the direction of the bar, where the two women from earlier had found new prey.

“Dude, I’m not gonna ditch a buddy. Or out one, if that’s what you’re thanking me for.” He took a long pull, emptying his beer, as his gaze roamed over the bar.

“Thanks for all of this, actually. I’ve had a lot of fun tonight. Normally, I hate going out.” And this is the closest I’m ever likely to get to a date, and it was with you, and that makes me really happy.

“Yeah,” Chase said with a grin. “But normally, you don’t go out with me.”

That was unfortunately true enough, Ave thought.
